Descriptions

Location
North end of Camano Island. See the map for the exact location.

Attractions
This paddle is what do they call it, "A big bang for the buck." There is tons of scenery in the form of mountains and nature. The colors in the water here at the right time of day, later evening and in the winter make it what I call the Mylar Sea. When the sun is setting to the south in the fall and winter sometimes the conditions are right for a wild display of color in the water and sky making this a premiere photographers dream.

Conditions
The conditions on the September 18,2010 paddle at English Boom were almost perfect. Fairly placid conditions on the water. The tide was up.

Warnings
This is a GIANT mudflat area at lower tides. See the view from the satellite image in the My Google Maps on this page.

Wind can blow hard here from north or south. Wave action can be be fairly intense. Many underwater hazards in the form of old rotten pilings.

Paddle route
The route on September 18,2010 was to west to the tip of Camano Island and then back east towards Stanwood which is on the mainland.

Paddlers could possibly go to other locations from English Boom on Camano Island like Maple Grove, Utsalady Bay. There is a passage between Stanwood and Camano Island where the bridge to the islands is located. Under the right conditions paddler could continue on to the Stillaguamish River or Kayak Point or even further south like Camano Island State park or Cavellero County park on the east side mid way down Camano Island. See the Island County regional section here at PaddleHeaven.com list below. For the Stillaguamish River and Kayak check out the Snohomish County put-ins and paddle route ideas.

NOTE, the English Boom and the north end of Port Susan are both massive mudflats at low tide.

Nature
Tons of birds. English Boom is a wildlife preserve. Many herons make this their home and have a huge rookery here. When the tide goes out the herons fly to feeding grounds and it looks like an airport runway with them flying overhead.

There are gulls, kingfishers, hawks, waterfowl and I am sure more to see for the observant paddler.

For other paddling locations on and around Camano Island check out the Island County paddling ideas page here at PaddleHeaven.com.

Accommodations

There is no camping allowed at English Boom.

There are two inexpensive places to stay on the southern end of Camano Island.

Camping is at the Camano Island State Park.

Cama Beach State Park is a refurbished early 20th century resort with cheap cabins on the water.

At both locations there are kayaking possibilities. From Cama you can launch from the cabins front door or close by. Camano State park has free car top launching.

The two state parks are great places to visit.

Kayak Point Snohomish County Park is located south of Stanwood about 8 miles.

For some budget camping, cabins, yurts, RV and hostels, check out Paddle Heaven's Island map and Island page of links as well as Paddle Heaven's Camping cabins and more.
