Young's Skagit County park is a rock skipping paradise. Tons of flat skippers to play with and to launch a kayak in a short distance from the vehicle.

Launching is free.

Paddling Guemes Island

Fantastic getaway place with an old fashioned Pacific Northwest feeling. Here people crab, fish and relax when the is out. OK, the sun isn't out all that much in the PNW. But it is sunnier here then in the Big shitty to the south.

The resort offers $85 yurts for four people, and at low tide walks are wonderful.

This put-in is located on the north end of the island. See the map provided on this page.

To the tune of, "If you're going to San Francisco", heading to Guemes from the Big Shitty to the south, get off the freeway at Conway along I-5 south of Mt Vernon. Get off there if you have any interest in food and other paddling locations along the route. Skagit County is foodie county and paddling country USA. From the Interstate five exit to the Guemes Ferry in Anacortes you will be assaulted by produce and fresh seafood. So, if your smart and like food bring cooler and hog up on the great stuff sold along the roads all the way to the put-in. Foodie County offers a ton of selections in the summer when most will be paddling in this mega wonderland of goodies. Anacortes has several places to find fresh seafood. Sometimes you can see the truck leave the water heading to the shop to sell fresh from the sea.

Otherwise take the boring freeway. Although there is cheap gas below the Swinomish Channel bridge on the way from I5 to when crossing over to Fidalgo Island. Actually if you look at the map you can find the gas station next to the tribal casino and then go back towards Anacortes and then south on Reservation Road to La Conner. Along the way you could stop in at Snee Oosh another hot spot for paddling in this Foodie Paddle County.

Year round paddling is possible here, for the hardcore. Winter has shorter days and less people and more quiet. Each season here and elsewhere in this region has something to contribute paddlers.

Don't read this section because you probably won't care anyway. Cold water kills. There can be plenty of boats traveling around. Boats = drunks. Drunks = possible disaster. There are plenty of rocks on the north tip of the island that come and go with the tide. There are currents around the island. Some of the currents are swift. Guemes Channel between the Island and Anacortes can be moving fast one way or the other.

Paddle route
Take your pick. Check the tides. Check the weather and head out around the island if you have time and stamina and if the tides and wind are in your favor. Jack Island is only short distance off to the east of the put-in.

On the western side of Guemes you can paddle Cypress and beyond. North to Alaska or at least to many of the other San Juan Islands you can see from the northern tip of Guemes.

There are some critters in the water and out. Mostly bird life and seals. Lower tide there is some interesting life along the north end.

Bring what you need or pick up some stuff at the General Store at the ferry landing.

Supposedly there is some stuff to buy in the store at the resort. I only saw wine and t-shirts and not much in the way of practical food or other supplies you might want or need. Drinking booze and paddling isn't recommended. :)

There is no camping or hostels on Guemes Island.

But the Guemes Island Resort actually has some limited economical stuff to rent in the form of yurts. With four people the $85.00 bucks for a yurt is pretty cheap or even two. There are cabins but unless you have money or a crowd they are not within the low budget this site pushes.

There is car camping in Washington Park in Anacortes. This is one of the best kept secrets of Washington State.

There are lots of kayaking camping opportunities beyond this launch to camp at.

See the map link below for more ideas in the area.

For some budget camping, cabins, yurts, RV and hostels, check out Paddle Heaven's map and page of links as well as Paddle Heaven's Camping cabins and more.

Additional Information

Deliverance rating. The crazy bell doesn't ring all that loud on or around Guemes Island. This doesn't appear to be part of the meth addict trail that is on the mainland Puget Sound area. I don't think methers can afford the ferry fee or have the patience for the 5 minute ferry ride across the water from Anacortes.

Tranquility Ranking
One way to up the tranquility rank besides taking Valium, until a National Day of Silence, no fossil fuel noise, try hearing protection. The noise level paddling around Guemes Island isn't or wasn't all that bad.
