Kayaking and longer term parking at Cornet Bay Deception Pass State Park

Launch
Kayaks and other human powered craft can be launched in the grassy area west of the boat launch. During the last visit the tide was ebbing and the launch was fairly muddy, slimy. Was able to get footing waling down what appeared to be an old boat like ramp. Otherwise the beach is fairly rocky for kayak launching. Wading out a bit to avoid the rocks might be necessary. Thank gawd for the dry suit due to the COLD water.

Parking
Longer term parking is available at Cornet Bay Deception Pass State Park for paddlers interested in more then day tours and looking to do extended kayak touring in the area.

LTP, longer term parking at Cornet Bay was $10 overnight when last visited March 5, 2010. See the picture provided from the park information board in the parking area. Also see the fees and permits at Washington State Parks Unattended vehicle overnight parking $10.

There is a lot of planning that needs to go into a paddle adventure. A partial list that this site hopes to help iwth include things like:

    One of the biggies when it comes to kayaking is where to put in. Since most waterfront property is private, finding a place to paddle is half the battle.

    The next are things like parking. Is there adequate parking and how long can a vehicle be left and how much is it.

    This is also a place to launch for day touring in other areas of the Skagit Bay directly to the east of the kayak put in.

    Directly across the bay from the launch site is Ben Ure Island. This small island features a Washington State Park rental cabin. Reservations for a night in the cabin can be made online with the park.

    Route
    Note, this paddle was in the protected waters of Cornet Bay and did not have anything to do with Deception Pass under the bridge etc. Tidal currents can be very strong and for experienced paddlers that know what they are doing.
    Cornet Bay is a shallow bay and especially at low tide. Some mud flats in the west end and sea grasses grace the floor of the waters here. The route was about 3 miles. The shoreline east of the launch site is tree lined with no houses or other human interruptus.

    Other routes.
    Cornet Bay can be a great jumping off point for those paddlers that are interested and properly outfitted with the gear and skills.

    Close by are at least three Washington Water Trails Association kayak camps, Skagit Island, Hope Island and Ala Spit. For paddlers into sea kayaking and kayak camping this is a might be a good put in spot.

    Besides cold water and other kayaking conditions there is the people factor.
    The creep meter rating for people around here is fairly low. There seems to be a lot of people coming and going. The state park personnel are around a lot watching during this little adventure. Keep NOTHING in the vehicle.
