Link purchasing comes from places like Yellow Page listing where the web address is displayed online in directories. Very important. People can use social networking sites to link one another. Businesses can use the same resources to a lesser extent. Finding the correct directory online to list in to get back links can take some serious SEO footwork.
Tom's Lawn Mowing used to have a link in the original Yahoo hand indexed directory from way back in the 1990s. That listing was removed by Yahoo for one reason or another. The lesson is that no links from other "important" players online and a site will be buried by the popularity contest winners.
The Internet is not much different from the television show Survivor. Make alliances or else your web page(s) will not show up on the first page of 10 results most people choose to search with.
There is a big problem in getting Joe or Sally Boring to understand the importance of exchanging links. Most people are either not into SEO web design or are too lazy or clueless to understand to be found is a community effort. The Internet was built on a work together basis. Getting a site to ask and or answer a request to link is almost impossible.
One of the leaders in the popularity contest is the ODP, Open Directory Project. Like in high school if you can get elected prom king or queen getting listed in the ODP is about as difficult and time consuming but well worth it if you site can get in with the in crowd at the ODP. This directory is hand edited. Tom's Lawn Mowing has never made into the ODP "A" list.
Note that Google and other probably use the in crowd contents at ODP as a way to validate, verify that sites are really what they say they are. The Google Directory for businesses is based on getting selected as ODP in crowd membership.
