Lopez Island
United States / Washington / San Juan County Bike Routes Lastupdate:6.21.08 Lopez Island Bicycling
This trip starts at the Washington State Ferry terminal in Anacortes Washington. If driving to the terminal there is some fee parking near the landing. You can leave your vehicle for free in Anacortes next to the Marina downtown in the dirt parking lot for several days. As the in the marina office for details. Take the PT bus to the terminal or ride the about 4 miles to the WSF. The route to the ferry is on quite side streets then on the busy Oakes Avenue with up to 40 miles an hour traffic. There are bike lanes along Oaks. The incline is no big deal until you get to the terminal and there is ride down to the ticket office. Go down on the left side of the terminal check in and ticket booths. Buy your ticket inside the terminal building in the main lobby. There are ticket machines that use credit and debit cards or stand in line for the person behind the window. Get to the terminal early. Bikes are loaded before vehicles. Use the foot path ramp outside the ticket lobby area. Wait for instructions from the WSF crew. There are restrooms in the WSF building. After boarding the ferry generally there are ropes to secure bikes. Follow instructions from the crew. Usually you walk to the ferry then can ride the length of the boat to the bike location that is at the other end along the walls. Little bike symbols with ropes. Ask any of the crew if in doubt. Note the lower deck can be very cold in transit. Dress for the cold. Go upstairs on the trip for warmth, views, food and friendly people and information, maps, restrooms. Once at Lopez bikes leave the ferry first. I suggest waiting until all the vehicles are off and up the hill before taking off. Yes, there is a hill and it is a steep one from the ferry up and over to Odlin Park. Odlin is a very popular San Juan County park. Get reservations via the site link above. The park does have bike and hiker walkin campsites. I don't think bikers and hikers are turned away. I think they can stick you most anyplace in a pinch. Odlin is a lovely spot on the water with a view of Shaw Island and the county park over there. Once you reach Odlin the big hills are over unless you go to Spencer Spit State Park. This park features camping and great beach access, clamming etc. when in season. Another spot for camping is at Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping The route on Lopez Island in the maps on this web page are all in the north end. The roads are by in large without shoulders. The little amount of traffic is very friendly off the main artery to and from the ferry. The route is not flat but the hills are no big deal unless you go all the way to the beach at Spencer. Lopez Island main commercial area offers real food items that are not usually available outside the big cities. So eating good out of the store(s) there is AOK. Good bike services are availble Lopez Bicycle Works 2845 Fisherman Bay Rd. Rentals, parts, repairs. Lopez is a decent day tripping island and better for bicycle camping and exploring the sites and entire island in more depth. Disclaimer Travel, visit, bike ride or do anything at your own risk. There MANY things to consider from .gov, angry residents, traffic, weather, dogs, road conditions etc. You name it. Like cars dogs and bicycles don't mix once hit or bitten twice shy. Dogs and cars rule. Many of the routes here are in places where people choose not to tie up their little poop machines. They can be a deadly combination. You need to have a defensive plan of action to employ in a split second. Some areas are worse then others. Bike trails seem to have fewer dog attacks.
